Course Information
Description Understanding music through the study of cultural periods, major composers, and musical elements. Illustrated with audio recordings and live performances. (Does not apply to a music major degree.)
Required Textbooks Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer.

We will be using a digital book (open educational resources) with free access through the blackboard.


Understanding Music: Past and Present by N. Alan Clark (Author), Thomas Heflin (Author), Jeffrey Kluball (Author). This textbook is free and available in a PDF version though Blackboard ultra.

Learning Outcomes

Students will engage in active listening to identify, interpret, distinguish, and critique the elements of


music in instrumental and vocal music(classical, jazz, music for the stage and screen, and classic rock).

Students will be able to summarize the history and development of musical styles as connected to

Students will be able to map, associate, and compare the development of music with the different periods

Participation is graded. Participation means that you have to actively write on the discussion board, do
your listening exercises, and follow up at least two times any announcement on the Blackboard.
We will study the different chapters from the textbook every week. You will have an assignment every
week and it counts as your class participation grade.
You will have at least one quiz every week, no late quizzes will be accepted.
You will have one Final exam due on August 11.

Assessments on this course will have a strong focus and on the student's work authenticity, ethic, and personal responsibility, among other learning outcomes.

You will have one Final exam due Friday, July 5.


Additional Information

The Final Exam will be posted and available 3 days before the due date, so you will have enough time to


prepare and submit your exam.


What counts as an absence?


This is an online course. Not doing one assignment counts as an absence. Assignment means that you have


to submit on the Blackboard your participation in the weekly discussion board plus you have to submit


your listening assignment due each week. For example, if in one week you did not do the listening


assignment plus you forgot to participate in the discussion board then you get 2 absences.


Notice that more than 5 absences will make you fail this course.


Absences will count against your final attendance grade as well. Attendance is tracked via blackboard.
